Phases of Competiton
The Miss America Opportunity is designed to showcase each candidate as a well-rounded individual through five phases of competition. Candidates have the opportunity to share their accomplishments, goals, talents, personal style, and commitment to their communities.
Private Interview — 30%
Candidates meet privately with the judging panel for an opportunity to share who they are beyond the stage. Judges learn more about each candidate’s accomplishments, goals, community service, communication skills, and what she hopes to accomplish as a titleholder.
Health & Fitness — 20%
The Health & Fitness phase celebrates confidence, energy, and a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Candidates will take the stage in required Miss America x Rebel Athletic competition fitness wear while showcasing their confidence, strength, and stage presence.
All contestants are required to purchase and wear an approved Miss America x Rebel Athletic fitness outfit for this phase of competition.
Talent / HERStory — 20%
Contestants will have up to 90 seconds to present a performance talent or HERStory™ presentation. Performance talents must be selected from the Miss America Organization Approved Performance Talent List or receive approval from the Miss America National Office. The judges consider preparation, performance or storytelling ability, overall presentation, stage presence, entertainment value, and the contestant’s ability to captivate an audience.
Evening Wear — 20%
Contestants will model an evening gown of their choice while showcasing their personal sense of style. Judges evaluate stage presence, confidence, composure, and the contestant’s overall ability to represent the Miss America Opportunity at high-profile events.
Judging is based on how the contestant carries and presents herself, not on the gown itself or its perceived cost.
On-Stage Question — 10%
Each contestant will be asked one question on stage regarding her Community Service Initiative (CSI) and will have up to 20 seconds to respond. This phase allows judges to evaluate her commitment to service, perspective on community impact, communication skills, intelligence, personality, charisma, composure, and aptitude for the titleholder opportunity.
